Tour Description
Enjoy a special one-day excursion through the history of the famous archaeological sites of Pompeii and Herculaneum, destroyed by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 A.D.
Entering Pompeii from Porta Marina you immediately reach the Forum area, the centre of the social, political, economic, and religious life of the city. On the right stands the majestic Basilica, a large rectangular building divided into three naves by massive columns, which was the heart of Pompeii’s economic life. Moreover, inside Pompeii, you can admire the temple of Apollo, the Temple of Jupiter, next to which stood the covered market (Macellium) which also housed moneychangers and shops, and the Forum Baths built around 80 B.C. and decorated inside with precious stucco.
Some time before the destruction, luxurious villas were built in Herculaneum which we can still admire today. Along the stone and limestone paved streets of Vesuvius we can see various public buildings, like the monumental theatre, the Mater Deum temple, and private buildings with a very different style from those we can find in Pompeii. The most beautiful buildings rediscovered at Herculaneum are the Casa di Nettuno e Anfitrite, with beautiful mosaic decorations, the Casa dell'Atrio Mosaico, la Casa dei Mobili Bruciati and la Casa del Cervo.
This special excursion continues with a visit to a typical local vineyard where we will taste exclusive red and white wines famous for their quality and exported all over the world.
